The Painted Hills are found in the John Day National Monument region of eastern Oregon. In this photo, I did minimal color correction; The red and gold strata of the hills in the foreground naturally contrast with the gray-blue ash mounts in the background. Different geological events created different deposits of minerals that have slowly been uncovered by erosion.

Same day at the Painted Hills, but looking the opposite direction. The lighting is less dramatic than in the top image, but you can still see the contrast in color between the Painted Hills and the gray ash mounts.
